
Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of Smiley Kids Montessori School, located at Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, following a swimming pool accident that claimed the life of a two-year-old girl, Rafiala Ogbodo.
The announcement was made on Saturday through a statement shared on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Lagos State Government.
According to the statement, officials from the Lagos State Security Commission and Education Quality Assurance Office under the Ministry of Education have visited the school to conduct preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The school has been sealed for a thorough investigation and to identify possible lapses that led to the unfortunate death.
The statement read, “The attention of the Lagos State Safety Commission has been drawn to the swimming pool accident that occurred on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at Smiley Kids Montessori, Heritage Place Estate, Sangotado, Lagos, resulting in one death. ” Two-year-old female, Raphaela Ogbodo.
“Officials from the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Education Quality Assurance Office of the Ministry of Education have visited the site of the accident to conduct preliminary investigation and ascertain the root cause of the unfortunate incident.
“Although the school remains on lockdown pending further investigation, the state government expresses its deepest condolences to the family of the victim and its commitment to prevent future incidents.
“The Director General of the Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, said all school owners and caretakers must adhere to safety rules to prevent accidents in the state.
“Mojola further said that more information will be made available once the investigation into the accident is completed.”
A Nigerian woman, identified as Ella, has pleaded for justice following the death of her two-year-old daughter at a school in Lagos, PUNCH reported on Thursday.
He told that his daughter left for school on Wednesday but did not return alive.
