Lagos Blue Line rail transported two million passengers in one year – LAMATA

Last year, the Blue Line of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit transported almost two million passengers.

The Managing Director, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Abimbola Akinnajo, made this known in a statement signed by the Head, Corporate Communications, LAMATA, Kolawole Ojelabi, in Lagos on Wednesday.

The Blue Line was inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 23, 2023.

However, NAN reports that after a series of tests, it started transporting passengers on September 4, 2023.

According to Akinnajo, the electric-powered Blue Line is the first of its kind in West Africa

Akinnajo said the Lagos State Government was pleased with the safety record of the rail line.

He said, “We have been successful in implementing the vision of the Governor for an inter-modal integrated transport system.”

He said, “On this momentous occasion, we reflect on the significant impact this transformational project will have on Lagos and its residents.”

He said the Blue Line connects Lagos residents from Marina to Mile 2, giving them a reliable and efficient transport option.

He said passengers, including white-collar workers, entrepreneurs, students and tourists, have embraced the rail system, contributing to the growth of the state's economy.

“Over the years, the Blue Line has served two million passengers without any significant disruption.

“In August 2024, we will increase the daily frequency of trips from 54 to 72, reducing the travel time between Marina and Mile 2 from about 30 minutes to 18 minutes.

“The success of the Blue Line has attracted international attention, and the interest of potential investors in future rail infrastructure projects in Lagos.”

“This achievement underlines our commitment to provide world-class transportation solutions to our citizens,” he said.

Akinnajo said LAMATA is dedicated to expanding its rail network and improving the overall transport experience.

“We are grateful for the continued support of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, our partners and the people of Lagos,” Akinnajo said.
