President Bola Tinubu is chairing the National Council of States (NCS) meeting at the State House, Abuja.
The meeting, which is the first such meeting since the swearing-in of President Tinubu on May 29, 2023, is taking place at the Council Chambers with former President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Goodluck Jonathan also in attendance.
The meeting, which began at 12.27pm after the singing of the national anthem and national oath, also had former heads of state, General Abdul Salam Abubakar and Yakubu Gowon participating virtually.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former military president Ibrahim Babangida were absent from the meeting.
Among those who attended the meeting are Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, governors and deputy governors of some states.
THISDAY learnt that the first meeting of the NCS is expected to discuss the state of the nation, particularly the economic challenges facing the country.
The Council of State is a statutory body recognised by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and plays a key advisory role in the governance of the country.
The Council consists of the President as Chairman and the Vice-President as Vice-Chairman, and has as members all former Presidents and Heads of State, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, all State Governors and the Attorney General of the Federation.
