Nigerian team captain Anuoluwapo Opeyori lost 2-0 to Switzerland's Tobias Kuenzi in his first group match of the Paris Olympics men's badminton singles on Tuesday night.
The two-time African champion, who is Nigeria's sole representative in badminton at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, displayed superb technique and almost won the first set, leading by three set points. However, he lost in the tie-break with a final score of 22-20.
Opeyori came back in the second set and levelled the score at 6-6, but Kuenzi refused to give up and eventually won the set 21-14 to complete a 2-0 victory.
Despite the setback, Opeyori is set to return to the court on Thursday to take on China's Li Shifeng.
