Suspected thugs allegedly affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday attacked the Edo State Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), destroying and looting properties worth millions of Naira.
The thugs also reportedly destroyed doors, windows and office equipment at the party secretariat.
Many electronics, computers and other valuable items were also taken by the thugs, who ransacked the building with plans to attack anyone in the building.
Reacting to the incident, the Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, Chris Osa Nehikhare, condemned the attack in strong terms, describing it as a desperate attempt by the APC to intimidate the PDP and thwart the party's efforts to reclaim its position. And described as a careless attempt. The mandate was stolen in the September 21 governorship election.
He said: “It is quite disappointing and unfortunate that the APC rallied thugs to attack our party secretariat on Thursday to sabotage the efforts of our great party to reclaim the mandate given to us by the Edo people And the election for the post of Governor can be stopped on 21st September.
“The thugs led by Kapuepue, the younger brother of one of the APC warlords, invaded our party secretariat, destroyed and took away properties worth millions of naira.
“If APC is confident that they won the election freely and have nothing to hide, why are they panicking and mobilizing thugs to attack the PDP secretariat.
“This is barbaric and completely condemnable and we urge the relevant security agencies to thoroughly investigate the attack and ensure that the perpetrators of this cowardly act are brought to justice. The PDP remains resolute and will neither be intimidated nor discouraged in its pursuit of justice and restoration of its mandate.
“We are however calling on our party members and supporters to remain calm and firm in the face of provocation as we explore every legal channel to reclaim our mandate,” Nehikhare said.
But reacting, the Publicity Secretary of the APC, Peter Uwadia-Igbinigi, described the allegation as baseless and urged the PDP to sort out its internal problem, warning that the party should not drag the APC into its dirty matter.
He said it was absurd to label those who allegedly attacked the PDP office as APC thugs, considering whether the thugs wore APC uniforms or had APC paraphernalia.
He said the APC government in the state had already started a project which the PDP government had failed to complete, adding that his party was still riding high on its victory and keeping the state on the right track.
He said: “How can the PDP say that the thugs who attacked their party secretariat were from APC? Did the people have anything to show that they were APC members? The allegation is baseless and there is no evidence for it.
“The allegation is serious and criminal in nature, so the PDP must ensure they have evidence before laying charges. We will urge the PDP to resolve its internal problems and not drag APC into this.
