Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has an interest in signing Benfica defender Tomas Araujo at the turn of the year, according to O Jogo.
The Portuguese tactician has deployed a 3-4-2-1 formation since his move to United. He has his sights on signing players, who can fit his system.
Amorim has plenty of central defenders at the Red Devils, but the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are expected to leave soon.
The 39-year-old has his sights on landing an upgrade and reports claim that Araujo has emerged as the number one centre-back target for him.
Benfica have not ruled out the prospect of a mid-season exit, but they are expected to demand at least £50 million for the 22-year-old ace.
It remains to be seen whether United can make such a huge outlay in January. They may want a loan deal with an obligation to buy.
United are bound to face competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea, who explored a deal for Araujo before the transfer deadline last summer.
