The Cross River State chapter of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN) has directed its members to commence indefinite strike from Monday, December 9, 2024, over failure of the state government to heed its demands.
The announcement was in response to a petition by Governor Bassey Otu urging judicial officers to postpone a planned action on salary increases and better conditions of service.
MAN therefore directed its members to withdraw all official duties including court meetings from Monday until further notice.
The directive was contained in 'Bulletin No. 2: Indefinite Strike', which was witnessed by the leadership signed by MAN State Chairman, Godwin Ona and General Secretary, Solomon Abu.
Recall that the magistrates had issued a seven-day ultimatum on November 5, 2024, threatening to shut down the equipment on November 27, 2024, with a three-day warning for the state government to meet its eight-point demands .
“A sequel to our letter dated November 11, 2024, to the Governor of Cross River State, wherein the strike notice was extended till Friday, November 22, 2024, to enable the State Government to consider our demands.
“In view of the Bulletin No. 1 of 27th November, 2024 wherein we had commenced warning strike from 27th November – 29th November, 2024, and the Government of Cross River State failed to address our demands contained in our communiqué dated Is. November 5, 2024, or even taking any steps to negotiate with us,
“We are going on an indefinite strike from Monday, December 9, 2024, until our demands are met,” the statement concluded.
