The Kano State Government has completed plans to set up an independent judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the deadly shooting of protesters during the #EndBadGovernance protests in the state.
Spokesman to the state governor, Sanusi Bature, made this known at a press conference in his office in Kano on Monday.
Recently, Amnesty International urged Governor Abba Yusuf to conduct a thorough investigation into the general conduct of security agencies and the alleged involvement of hired thugs who allegedly disrupted the protests and caused destruction.
The incident took place during the #EndBadGovernance protests, where protesters demanded crucial economic reforms and restoration of fuel subsidies which were recently removed by the federal government.
The governor’s spokesperson said the committee’s main functions were to investigate the incident of fatal firing on protesters, find out the root cause of the looting of public and private properties during the protest and identify those behind it.
The state government has also announced prosecution of 632 suspects for vandalising public buildings, who have been produced in various courts in the state.
Sanusi said the state was committed to maintaining peace and order, warning that anyone found guilty of vandalism would be arrested and prosecuted.
