The Kano State Police Command has announced the arrest of 873 suspects for various crimes during the recent #End-Bad-Governance-Protests# in the state.
Addressing journalists in Kano on Monday, the state Commissioner of Police, Salman Dogo, paraded the suspects at the police headquarters in Bompai.
He said 76 suspects arrested for allegedly hoisting Russian flags during the protest have been transferred to the force headquarters in Abuja, the federal capital, for investigation.
“Welcome to this press conference today which will give a comprehensive update on the recent violent incidents that resulted in the looting and destruction of government and private properties in Kano State by thugs under the guise of the nationwide protest.
“The Kano State Police Command has worked diligently and professionally to deal with the aftermath of these incidents, and these efforts resulted in the arrest of eight hundred and seventy three (873) suspects and the recovery of large quantities of the following items;
He said, “Six hundred (600) suspects were arrested and prosecuted for various offences including criminal conspiracy, inciting unrest, rioting, theft, affray and arson.”
“One hundred and fifty (150) suspects were arrested and prosecuted for violating the curfew imposed by the Kano State Government.
“Investigations are ongoing to arrest additional six (6) suspects linked to the plotting of the destruction, arson and looting of the Kano Printing Press (KPP).
He said among other things, “Seventy-six (76) suspects flying Russian flags including a foreigner have been arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters, Abuja for secret investigation on charges of treason.”
“41 suspects were arrested for major crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping, car theft, while two (2) AK-47 guns were recovered as exhibits,” CP Dogo said.
Meanwhile, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced the lifting of the curfew imposed following the recent hunger strike in the state.
Curfew was imposed in the state during the hunger strike as a measure to maintain law and order and prevent further escalation of violence.
The state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Baba Danteyi, said the lifting of the curfew would allow residents to go about their daily activities without any restrictions.
