Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon was released from prison early Tuesday after completing a four-month sentence for disobeying a subpoena related to the Congressional investigation into the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack.
Bannon walked out of the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, according to Christy Breshears, a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. His representatives announced that they planned to hold a press conference in Manhattan later in the day.
On Tuesday morning, Bannon resumed his podcast and online show, stating his commitment to supporting Trump's presidential campaign.
He criticized the Democrats and their policies, alleging that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi imprisoned him to suppress his voice, despite being convicted by a jury and later sentenced by a judge.
Bannon said, “The four months I spent in federal prison not only broke me, but empowered me. “I am more energetic and more focused than I have ever been in my entire life.”
Bannon began his sentence on July 1 after the Supreme Court rejected his request to defer his prison term while he appealed his sentence.
In 2022, a jury found Bannon guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress: one for refusing to testify before a January 6 House committee and the other for Trump's attempt to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. For failing to provide documentation related to his participation in the efforts. ,
Additionally, Bannon is facing separate criminal charges in New York state court, where he is accused of defrauding donors who contributed to the construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border.
Bannon has pleaded not guilty to charges including money laundering, conspiracy and fraud. His trial in this case is scheduled to begin in December.
