Peoples Democratic Party chieftain Bode George has advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his presidential ambitions as he turns 81 in 2027.
George who was addressing a press conference in Lagos on Thursday said Atiku, who has been contesting for the presidency since 1993, should be satisfied with being an elder statesman.
“My advice to Atiku is this, you will be 81 in 2027 and you have been contesting for the presidency since 1993,” he said. It is time for you to calm down and act like an elder.'' I appeal to you in the name of Almighty Allah to serve, take it easy and leave everything for future generations.
Former Deputy National President of PDP also condemned the division in the party. He said that some members of the party are engaged in pursuing personal interests.
“We are where we are today because of a self-inflicted crisis; Please, we must now bury our personal ambitions and not let the PDP collapse. The party elders should tell some of these funny characters to calm down and think about our national interest rather than their personal interest.
“Nigerians are angry and hungry. Instead of telling APC the truth, some divisive, arrogant and hateful members are busy romancing the ruling party and are quick to refer to themselves as elder statesmen. Instead of creating crisis in our party, why are they not courageous enough to join APC? Do they really fear God? No member is big enough to hold the party to ransom,” George said.
He particularly urged the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, to stop trying to remove the Rivers State Governor, Siminalai Fubara from office.
“My advice to Vic is very simple,” he said. You are my political son. Therefore, I am appealing to them to calm down immediately. I know that friends had hurt him during the last PDP presidential election, but as a father I am advising him to please take it in stride. No one is bigger than any party. Forget what happened in the past and let's work together in the interest of this party.
“I want to ask the seniors in the top affairs of our party today, 'What exactly is the crime of Governor Siminalai Fubara of Rivers State?' What exactly is this gentleman's crime that some elders in our party are trying to throw him under the bus out of political selfishness? What is really happening that some members of the party are not concerned about what is happening in Rivers State? Governor Wike helped Governor Fubara become the number one citizen of the oil-bearing state. This has been acknowledged by the Governor himself on many occasions.
“Should the Governor now behave like a slave towards his predecessor and other characters because of this concept of theism, which is a misnomer in our politics? Why are some members of the party encouraging his predecessor to bring him down? He is in Abuja; He wants to control what is going on in Rivers State.
“Did governors before him behave like this? Why are party leaders not eager to mediate and bring both the groups back to normalcy? PDP cannot continue like this. Why can't we learn from our past mistakes? Is our party confused? If they do not want this party to move forward then why can't we ask all these miscreants to go and sit?”
