Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has commended the Dangote Refinery for its historic and historical start to the production of premium motor spirit or petrol.
Atiku, in a statement on Thursday, particularly commended Chairman, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, for demonstrating perseverance and a “can-do” spirit despite obstacles that came his way.
I commend and congratulate Alhaji Aliko Dangote for his efforts as the Dangote Refinery has started producing PMS. This shows his tenacity and ‘can do’ spirit and his belief in his motherland.

“This remarkable achievement is more than just a demonstration of one individual’s business acumen. It is also a manifestation of what corporate Nigeria can do to revive Nigeria’s economy and make it strong, dynamic and resilient.
“This is in keeping with my vision of an increased presence of the private sector in the Nigerian economy. I am a firm supporter of strong and visible involvement of the private sector in strategic sectors of the economy, whether alone or in partnership with the state.
“Nigerians know the hurdles Aliko had to overcome to achieve this victory. If the private sector must come forward to invest, create jobs and drive growth, the government must put in place more supportive regulations and enforce them efficiently.
“The biggest damage done by the APC-led government since 2015 has been the introduction of ‘reform’ initiatives that are difficult to implement and sustain, thereby eroding private sector confidence in our economy and driving investors away.
“There are some major milestones ahead as Nigeria moves towards achieving energy self-sufficiency. I hope Aliko will continue to lend its unwavering support in this journey.”
On Tuesday, the refinery pumped out the first premium motor spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, from its 650,000 barrel-per-day capacity facility.
