The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, is dead.
Ayilara was believed to have died in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
Sources close to the family told Channels Television that he underwent surgery for prostate cancer on Wednesday and died few hours later.
“We are deeply saddened to inform you that our friend, brother and family, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, is dead,” a family source said.
The death of the police commissioner was also confirmed by a top police officer in Akwa Ibom State, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter.
When contacted for confirmation, the Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, ASP Timfon John, told Channels Television in Uyo that, “the command cannot comment until it receives an official statement from the family”.
In November 2023, as DCP, Ayilara was appointed as the Acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos.
Ayilara, a former Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the state Criminal Investigation Department, took over from AIG Idowu Owohunwa.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Agbetokun, appointed Ayilara as head of the Akwa Ibom State command in February 2024.
