The House of Representatives has recommended a recapitalization program of at least N500 million to keep all electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) in the country operational.
The recommendation was made after the adoption of a motion by Ibrahim Isiaka (APC-Ogun) at the plenary session on Wednesday in Abuja.
Earlier moving the motion, Mr Isiaka said the activities of Discos in the country were posing a threat to the economic stability and welfare of Nigerians.
He said consumers are being forced to pay for meters they have already financed, creating financial pressure on households and businesses already facing economic challenges.
The MLA said that when essential services are used against the citizens they were intended to serve, it hinders growth and development, which amounts to economic sabotage.
“Despite continued regulatory oversight and demands for accountability by the Committee on Electricity from these companies, DISCOs continued to operate with impunity and disregard for consumer rights.
“The actions of DISCOS pose a significant threat to Nigeria’s economic stability and the welfare of its citizens. There is a need to stand up against injustice and prioritize the needs and rights of constituents,” he said
The House urged the Federal Energy Ministry to declare Discos as non-state actors and take immediate measures to address their reckless actions that are endangering the country's economy.
The MPs said they should activate public awareness campaigns and initiatives to educate consumers about their rights and appropriate channels for resolution of complaints related to electricity services.
In his decision, House Speaker Abbas Tajuddin ordered the electricity committee to investigate the activities of DISCOs, to hold them accountable and protect consumer rights.

He said the committee should examine the implementation of strict rules governing the operations of Discos to ensure transparency and fairness in their dealings with consumers.
The Speaker directed the Committee to report to the House within four weeks for further legislative actions.
