The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed one illegal herbal medicine factory In Mararaba, Nasarawa State.
The agency said in a post on Facebook on Wednesday that the factory at Amina Plaza was producing dangerous, unregistered herbal mixture.
“NAFDAC has destroyed an illegal herbal medicine factory in Mararaba near the Federal Capital Territory. Acting on a tip off from a concerned citizen, a team led by Tamanuwa Andrew, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Investigation and Enforcement, discovered the production of dangerous, unregistered herbal mixture capable of causing serious health problems including liver cirrhosis and kidney failure. NAFDAC noted that the owner of the factory claimed that its products sourced from Ogun State were effective and harmless despite their shelf life of six months.
However, he admitted to purchasing the items with fake NAFDAC registration numbers from Onitsha, while denying any involvement in the production.
The agency said they will be prosecuted after investigation.
Additionally, NAFDAC said it seized fake and substandard drugs worth over N20 million at Wuse market in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
It revealed that the consignment contained tramadol, aphrodisiacs and other synthetic drugs, demonstrating the agency's dedication to combating the spread of harmful products.

Earlier this week, NAFDAC noted that it had cracked down on counterfeit wine in the same state.
According to the agency, the products were located in New Nyanya, Maraba and Masaka.

It said: “NAFDAC has conducted a major raid on liquor stores in Mararaba Market and New Nyanya and Masaka areas of Nasarawa State.
“The operation targeted counterfeit and adulterated wines and spirits, resulting in the seizure of products worth over ₦41.2 million.
“NAFDAC’s investigation and enforcement team is actively investigating the importers or manufacturers behind these counterfeit beverages.”
